What is the ruling on my parents’ refusal of my wearing the niqab, and should I obey them in this, especially since they stipulated the completion of the marriage for me to wear it? What is the ruling on my leaving the internship year in the College of Nursing, knowing that it is mixed, and sometimes requires me to remove the niqab, and that my parents threaten to break off my engagement if I do not complete it? Is it permissible for my parents to reject the young man who proposed to me, knowing his good character and religious commitment?

A woman's covering her face is an obligation, and it is obligatory for every adult woman, regardless of her marital status. Obedience to parents is only obligatory in what is good. If they command disobedience, then there is no obedience to a creature in disobeying the Creator. The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "There is no obedience in disobedience to Allah; obedience is only in what is good." We advise being gentle with the father and striving to convince him, seeking help from those whose words he might listen to. Working or studying in an impermissible mixed environment, neglecting any of one's obligations, and exposing oneself to causes of temptation are not permissible. A father does not have the right to prevent his daughter from marrying without a legitimate Shar'i reason; otherwise, he would be considered an 'aḍil (one who unjustly prevents marriage), and his guardianship would thus be forfeited. The girl has the right to present her case to the Shar'i court, and if the 'aḍal is proven before the judge, he will marry her off or appoint someone to marry her off.
