The question

How can one deal with a wife who refuses to compromise in disagreements and threatens divorce for the most trivial reasons, and leaves the home for her family's house, given the presence of children and the fear for them from divorce, and with a mother-in-law who always finds fault with the husband?

The answer

Marital life is built upon harmony and compassion, and both spouses should strive to make each other happy through good words and deeds. Allah Almighty says: (And due to them [the wives] is similar to what is expected of them, according to what is reasonable, but the men have a degree over them). The Prophet (peace be upon him) guided a man who disliked a characteristic in his wife to look at what pleases him, saying: "No believing man should hate a believing woman; if he dislikes one characteristic in her, he will be pleased with another."

If your wife is obedient when she is pleased, then you should strive to appease her when she is angry with a kind word, a gentle touch, and a gentle approach, not with insults, curses, or abandonment. You should not consider divorce merely for this reason, especially if there are children, and for the sake of preserving the family.

A wife's service to her husband's parents is not obligatory, and he cannot compel her to do so. However, it is recommended for the honor of the husband and obedience to him, as long as it does not cause her hardship.

It is not permissible for a wife to abandon her husband's bed or to treat him with arrogance by insulting or cursing him. If she does, she is disobedient and sinful. The husband is advised to look at the bright aspects of his marital life to overcome and overlook minor mistakes, and to advise each other on what cannot be overlooked.

The wife's father is advised to be neutral between the spouses and not to side with his daughter. Rather, he should discipline the oppressor and show compassion to the oppressed. It is better not to involve him and to resolve marital disputes without involving anyone else unless absolutely necessary.
