The answer

The newly acquired wealth is subject to zakat upon the completion of its hawl (one lunar year) if it is not an increment to the original capital, according to the Shafi'is, Malikis, and Hanbalis. As for the Hanafis, they hold that it is subject to zakat upon the completion of the hawl of the original capital in all cases. Everything acquired during the hawl is added to the original نصاب (minimum threshold) and both are subject to zakat together upon the completion of the hawl of the first. This opinion is more cautious and more absolving of one's responsibility.
