What is the difference between major shirk and minor shirk in terms of definition and ruling?

Major Shirk (polytheism) is for a person to ascribe a rival to Allah in His names and attributes, such as naming someone else with one of Allah's names exclusive to Him, or describing them with one of His attributes, or to ascribe a rival to Him in worship by supplicating to other than Allah, or to ascribe a rival to Him in legislation by adopting a legislator other than Allah. This type of shirk expels its perpetrator from the fold of Islam.

Minor Shirk is everything that the Sacred Law has prohibited, which is considered a means to major shirk and a way to fall into it, and which was named shirk in the texts, such as swearing by other than Allah, and saying: "What Allah wills and you will," or slight ostentation (riya') in acts of worship. This type of shirk does not expel its perpetrator from the fold of Islam, but it is among the grave sins.
