The minimum duration of menstruation, according to the majority of scholars, is one day and one night. If the total period during which a woman sees blood, along with any associated yellowish or brownish discharge, reaches one day and one night, then she is considered menstruating. She must abstain from what a menstruating woman abstains from until the blood ceases or its duration exceeds fifteen days (the maximum duration of menstruation).

If the duration of the days in which she sees blood exceeds fifteen days, then she is considered to be experiencing irregular bleeding (istihada). However, if the total amount of these drops does not reach one day and one night, she is not considered menstruating; rather, purification (istinja') is obligatory, and her ruling is that of a pure woman.
