The answer

Growing the beard is an undoubtedly legislated and obligatory matter, and it is the practice of the Prophets and the Companions. However, it is permissible to trim it or shave it off in cases of extreme necessity that cause definite harm, such as death or displacement. This is to alleviate hardship, provided that the necessity is assessed according to its extent. However, many claims of coercion to shave the beard are not based on a real reason, and are often just fears or an unwillingness to endure any annoyance due to religiosity. A Muslim must accept harm in the way of his religion, for that is part of the price of faith. And whoever is compelled to take a concession, he should not feel at ease with it, and his heart should remain attached to obeying Allah's command to grow the beard when the necessity ceases.
