Is it true that Uthman ibn Affan (may Allah be pleased with him) used to complete the recitation of the Qur’an in one rak’ah, and does this contradict the Prophet's (peace and blessings be upon him) hadith: "He who recites the Qur’an in less than three days does not understand it," and is it true that Imam Shafi'i (may Allah have mercy on him) used to complete the recitation of the Qur’an twice every day in Ramadan?

More than one scholar mentioned Uthman's recitation of the Qur'an in one rak'ah during a single night. Al-Hafiz Ibn Hajar, in "Al-Fath," stated that this was with a sound chain of narration from Al-Sa'ib ibn Yazid. It is widely reported in biographical texts that Al-Shafi'i completed sixty full recitations of the Qur'an in Ramadan. As for the hadith: "He who recites the Qur'an in less than three days does not comprehend it," what is negated here is only the fiqh (understanding) and comprehension, and it is not intended as a prohibition against reciting it in less than that time.
