Is visiting the grave of the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, and speaking to him and seeking intercession from him considered shirk?
A number of scholars are of the opinion that the hadith: "Whoever visits me after my death is as if he visited me during my life" is not authentic from the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him. They ruled it invalid due to the presence of an unknown narrator in its chain of transmission, namely Harun ibn Abi Qaz'ah al-Madani, and its weakness. Furthermore, Sheikh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah mentioned that this hadith is clearly false and contradicts the religion of Muslims, and that all hadiths regarding visiting graves are weak, not narrated by the compilers of authentic hadiths, but rather by those who narrate weak ones. Al-Albani clarified that Sheikh Ibn Taymiyyah does not forbid visiting the Prophet's grave, peace and blessings be upon him, but rather considers it legislated and desirable if it is not accompanied by transgressions and innovations such as setting out on a journey for it, in accordance with the hadith: "Journeys should not be undertaken except to three mosques." In summary, traveling to visit the Prophet's grave is an innovation (bid'ah) and forbidden. However, visiting it for someone who is already in Medina is legislated, as is traveling to pray in the Prophet's Mosque.
