Is a mentally ill person—who has lost the ability to control their life and neglected their religious duties—held accountable by Allah Almighty for their actions resulting from the illness?

Worry and sadness are repelled by turning to Allah the Almighty and striving in His obedience, and seeking help through patience and prayer. Therefore, it is recommended to engage in and increase acts of obedience, and to consult doctors. Prayer is not forsaken except by the insane person whose mind has completely departed. As for one whose mind is sound, he is obligated to perform it, and whoever abandons it is sinful and must make up what he deliberately missed if he was of sound mind. As for one who experiences intermittent insanity, there is no sin upon him, and he is not obligated to make up the prayers he missed during his episodes of insanity. A person is held accountable for his actions forbidden by Islamic law if he is of sound mind and acting voluntarily. However, if his mind is overwhelmed, there is no sin upon him, but he must compensate for any property belonging to others that he damaged.
