Is zakat obligatory on a sum of money that has reached the nisab and on which a full year has passed, even though its saver was in need of it during some months, and saved it to meet future needs such as repair or purchase?

Money saved for any purpose is subject to zakat if a full lunar year passes while it is in one's possession, starting from the moment it reaches the nisab (minimum threshold). Even if the money is saved for marriage or to buy a house, zakat is obligatory on it because it is wealth.

If a lunar year passes on the saved money after it has reached the nisab, zakat becomes due for each year separately. There is no zakat before the completion of the nisab or the passing of the lunar year.

The nisab for banknotes is approximately equivalent to eighty-five grams of pure gold, or five hundred and ninety-five grams of pure silver. The silver nisab is considered the lower and more beneficial threshold for the poor.
