What is the ruling on someone who intended to break their fast due to severe illness in Ramadan, then their illness ceased before Dhuhr after they had slept and not broken their fast? Do they continue to break their fast, or do they abstain for the rest of the day?

Whoever breaks their fast during Ramadan without a valid excuse, or for an excuse that later ceased to exist, must repent and make up for that day. The preponderant opinion is that only making up the day is obligatory, without expiation (kaffara), as is the view of the Shafi'i and Ahmad schools. As for someone whose excuse ceases during the day after they have broken their fast due to it, they must refrain from eating and drinking for the rest of the day out of respect for the sanctity of the month, and then make up that day later.
