How authentic is the Hadith: "Address people according to the level of their intellects"?

The hadith (definition): "Speak to people in a way they understand, and leave what they do not understand," has not been authentically narrated as a prophetic tradition (marfu') from the Prophet, peace be upon him. However, its meaning has been reported from some Companions. Muslim narrated from Ibn Mas'ud his saying: "You will not narrate a hadith to a people which their minds cannot comprehend, except that it will be a trial for some of them." In Sahih (definition) al-Bukhari, in a suspended narration, Ali said: "Speak to people in a way they understand. Do you wish that Allah and His Messenger be disbelieved?" The meaning of "what they understand" is what they comprehend, and "leave what they do not understand" means what is difficult for them to grasp. This indicates that ambiguous matters should not be mentioned to the general public, out of fear of causing discord. This includes narrations whose apparent meaning aligns with innovation (bid'ah) or rebellion against the ruler.
