What is the authenticity of the hadith "The wicked are the people of the Fire" or "The wicked are women"? And does it mean that wickedness is the norm among women and righteousness is an exception?
The hadith narrated by Imam Ahmad, Al-Hakim, and Al-Bayhaqi from Abdur-Rahman ibn Shibl states that the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "Indeed, the fussaq (evildoers) are the inhabitants of Hellfire." It was asked: "O Messenger of Allah, who are the fussaq?" He said: "(Women)." It was asked: "O Messenger of Allah, are they not our mothers, sisters, and wives?" He said: "Yes, but when they are given, they do not show gratitude, and when they are afflicted, they do not show patience."
This hadith was authenticated by Al-Hakim, and Al-Dhahabi agreed with him. Ibn Hajar said its chain of narration is strong, and Al-Haythami said its narrators are the narrators of Sahih. This hadith does not intend to condemn all women in general, but rather to warn against these actions (lack of gratitude when given, and lack of patience when afflicted) which are prevalent among women. Any man who possesses these traits also falls under this warning.
A grateful and patient woman is not included in this condemnation. And whoever strives to rid herself of these attributes can hope to enter Paradise, for the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "If a woman prays her five (daily prayers), fasts her month (Ramadan), guards her chastity, and obeys her husband, she will be told: 'Enter Paradise from whichever of its gates you wish.'"
