Istinja' is the removal of impurities discharged from either of the two private parts before ablution (wudu'), if such removal is necessitated. After it, a Muslim begins ablution, during which uttering Basmalah (Bismillah) is recommended. The obligatory acts of ablution are: intention, washing the face, washing the hands up to the elbows, wiping over the head, and washing the feet up to the ankles, along with maintaining order and continuity according to some. The manner of ablution involves washing the hands three times, then rinsing the mouth and nose (and expelling water) three times, then washing the entire face, then washing the hands up to the elbows, then wiping the head from front to back and returning, wiping the ears, and then washing the feet up to the ankles. It is recommended to say at the end of it: "I bear witness that there is no god but Allah, and I bear witness that Muhammad is His servant and His Messenger. O Allah, make me among those who repent and make me among those who purify themselves."
