Is it permissible to supplicate by virtue of invoking blessings upon the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), such as by saying: "Forgive me by virtue of invoking blessings upon our Master Muhammad"?

Scholars have not mentioned the permissibility of supplicating by virtue of sending prayers upon the Prophet. However, interceding by sending prayers upon the Prophet — peace and blessings be upon him — is a form of intercession through good deeds, which is permissible. Among the etiquettes of supplication is to avoid affectation. Therefore, a Muslim should not abandon the supplications of the Prophets mentioned in revelation and replace them with newly invented and affected formulas. Allah has taught supplication in His Book, and the Prophet — peace and blessings be upon him — taught supplication to his Ummah. It is better for a Muslim to supplicate with comprehensive supplications that encompass the good of this world and the Hereafter, emulating the Messenger of Allah — peace and blessings be upon him — for he preferred comprehensive supplications and abandoned others.
