The answer

"The maintenance of a needy wife and children takes precedence over the maintenance of parents.

If there are multiple dependents and the provider has only one relative, if he can provide for all of them, he is obligated to do so. If he cannot, he should start with himself, then his young child or female child, or the incapacitated, then his wife. The Hanbalis said: The wife takes precedence over the child.

This precedence is based on the assumption that both the wife and her children, and the husband's parents, are in need. However, if the parents are not in need, their maintenance is not obligatory upon the son. Although doing so is commendable, as it pleases the parents, and the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "The pleasure of the Lord is in the pleasure of the parent, and the wrath of the Lord is in the wrath of the parent" (Narrated by Al-Tirmidhi). However, this is conditional on it not affecting his obligatory maintenance towards his wife and child."
