Its author is a حافظ (a highly knowledgeable scholar of ). The book is distinguished by mentioning the hadiths that are acted upon, referring to the hadiths of the chapter, and citing the opinions of scholars from among the Companions, the Tabi'in, and the Imams. It also combines narration with the 'ilal (defects) of hadith and rulings on them, and frequently uses the term "hadith " (good hadith).
Scholars differ on its ranking among the books of Sunan, but the preponderant opinion is that it ranks below Sunan an-Nasa'i and Sunan Abi Dawud.
