The answer

The angels assigned to each accountable human being record everything they utter, whether good or evil. They also record a Muslim's intention for a good deed as a complete good deed. The angel's knowledge of the heart's action is either through Allah Almighty informing him, or by Allah creating knowledge for him through which he perceives it, or by them finding a pleasant scent when intending a good deed and a foul scent when intending an evil deed. As for seeking refuge with Allah (isti'adha), there is no difference whether it is done secretly or openly, for Allah knows what is secret and what is whispered, and what the soul whispers, and what is hidden in the breasts.
