The majority of scholars hold that eating elephant meat is unlawful (haram (definition)), while the Malikis and those who agreed with them considered it reprehensible (makrooh). This difference stems from their varying interpretations of the prohibition mentioned in the hadith (definition) narrated by Al-Bukhari, Muslim, and Malik from Abu Tha'labah: "The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, forbade eating any carnivorous animal with fangs and any bird with talons." However, it is permissible to benefit from its bones, body, and tusks if it has been slaughtered according to Islamic rites.
