The answer

A father is often keen to choose a righteous husband for his daughter, but he does not have the right to prevent her from marrying her equal. If he becomes obstinate, he is considered to be preventing her marriage (عاضل), and she has the right to refer the matter to a judge to marry her. If the suitor is a suitable match (كفؤ), the father does not have the right to refuse. It is advisable to try to persuade him or to involve relatives as intermediaries. If he still refuses, it is preferable to leave the suitor unless there is harm in doing so. In that case, she has the right to refer the matter to the Sharia judge.
