The answer

It is permissible to carpet the mosque with rugs, provided they do not contain decorations that distract the worshiper and cause him to lose his devotion. This is because the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, removed a patterned garment from in front of him due to its decorations distracting him from his prayer. Similarly, he told Aisha to remove her decorated curtain because it was being displayed to him during his prayer. Therefore, if the aforementioned rug has decorations that distract worshipers, it is disliked to use it as a covering in the mosque.
