The question

Is it possible to achieve the description of "Al-Qanateer" by reciting a thousand verses from memory, or is it necessary to do so from the Mushaf? Must the verses be different, or is repetition permissible? And is the intention of "Qiyam" (standing in prayer) to recite the thousand verses inside the prayer or outside of it?

The answer

It has been reported in the Hadith that whoever recites ten verses (ayat) [in prayer] will not be recorded among the heedless; whoever recites one hundred verses will be recorded among the devout (al-qanitin); and whoever recites one thousand verses will be recorded among those who have amassed great rewards (al-muqantirin).

Some scholars have interpreted the "recitation" (qiyam) mentioned in the Hadith as referring to prayer, which is the more apparent meaning, based on what was narrated from Abu Hurayrah, مرفوعاً (marfu'an, i.e., directly attributed to the Prophet), with the wording: "Whoever prays in a night with one hundred verses will not be recorded among the heedless, and whoever prays in a night with two hundred verses will be recorded among the devout, sincere ones."

It is not a condition for the recitation to be from memory; it is permissible to recite from the Mushaf (physical copy of the Qur'an), and it is hoped that one will attain this reward.

There is no mention from the jurists to indicate that one who repeatedly recites a single surah falls under this virtue.
