Is it permissible for a woman to travel alone a distance of less than 80 kilometers, especially if the country is safe and she needs to travel for work to support her children? And does the justification of absence of safety, which permits a man or two men to travel alone, also support the opinion that it is permissible for a committed woman to travel alone if she needs to and feels safe?

The basic principle is to prohibit a woman from traveling without the company of her husband or a mahram, regardless of whether the journey is long or short. This is what some Maliki jurists have stipulated. Others hold the view that she is permitted to travel a distance of less than a day and a night without a mahram if she feels safe, in order to avoid hardship and fulfill her essential needs. Some scholars have permitted her to do so in cases of extreme necessity and a valid excuse. As for the hadith of Al-Dha'eena (the litter/camel-borne woman), it is a narration about a future event and does not indicate the permissibility of travel without a mahram.
