Is it permissible to accept a scholarship and a monthly stipend from a university if it is known that its funds come from lotteries and usury?

There is no harm in taking a reward from a university that has both lawful (halal (definition)) and unlawful (haram (definition)) resources. However, if the sole source of its funds is unlawful (lottery and usury), then it is not permissible to take it. In this matter, if the donor's money is lawful, their gift is accepted; if it is unlawful, it is prohibited. If there is doubt about it, the safer approach is to refuse it. Those who permit this have cited as evidence that the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, mortgaged his shield to a Jew and accepted jizya (tribute) from them, despite knowing that their wealth might come from the sale of intoxicants and swine, and from corrupt transactions.
