Is the completion of a khulʿ case and separation from the husband considered a sin and a reprehensible act that necessitates Allah's reckoning, or is it the means to please one's parents and seek self-respect?

The answer

If a woman marries without the permission of her guardian (wali), and a Shar'i judge does not rule the marriage to be valid, then the marriage is invalid and must be annulled either by divorce or by a ruling from a ruler/judge. It is not permissible for the woman to allow the man to consummate the marriage, because she is not legally his wife. However, any children born from this union would be attributed to him. Women must be wary of men's deception. A man's mere marriage history does not justify refusing to marry him if he possesses piety and good character. A man must treat his wife well. If the marriage contract is valid, then the woman may seek khul' from her husband or request a divorce due to harm.
