Ayat al-Kursi is the greatest verse in the Qur’an because it encompasses the beautiful names of Allah and His exalted attributes, and negates imperfections from Him. Authentic, weak, and fabricated hadiths have been reported concerning its virtues. Among them: 1. Its description as the mistress of Qur’anic verses is authentic, but what has been reported regarding the virtue of its words is not. 2. Its equivalence to one-third or one-quarter of the Qur’an is not authentic. 3. The falling of idols and the fleeing of devils upon its revelation has not been reported in any مرفوع (marfu') hadith from the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him; rather, it has been attributed to Muhammad ibn al-Hanafiyyah. 4. Reciting it safeguards the home and oneself from Satan and his dominion, and this is confirmed from the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him. 5. The statement that it has a tongue and lips is authentic.
