Is it permissible to give zakat to one's poor parents with whom one lives, and is what you give them monthly from your salary considered zakat?

It is not permissible to give Zakat to poor parents, because their maintenance is obligatory upon the Zakat payer. Giving Zakat to them would protect his money from decrease by what he would otherwise have to spend on their obligatory maintenance. Ibn al-Mundhir transmitted the consensus of scholars on this matter. Therefore, what the mother paid from her salary to her parents is not considered Zakat.
