It is permissible to wipe over socks in summer and winter, even if there is no need, as long as the socks cover the area of the obligatory washing (for ablution), are worn while in a state of ritual purity, and with observance of the duration: one day and one night for a resident, and three days and nights for a traveler, starting from the first wiping after an event requiring ablution. The Malikis do not permit wiping except in cases of need.
