Is it permissible to pray for the absent on every deceased person?

The most preponderant opinion is that Salatul-Gha'ib (funeral prayer in absentia) is not prescribed except for one who has not been prayed over, such as a person who dies in a disbelieving land and no one prays over him. As for one who has been prayed over, the correct view is that praying over him in absentia is not prescribed, because the Sunnah (definition) does not contain anything to that effect except in the story of An-Najashi, who was not prayed over in his land. Many prominent figures and leaders died, and it has not been reported that the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, prayed over them. Some scholars hold the view that Salatul-Gha'ib is for one who has benefited Islam with his wealth or knowledge, while others believe it is permissible in all cases, which is the weakest of opinions.
