What is the ruling if the wife's relatives demand that the husband live far from his family as a condition for her return, knowing that he is the sole provider for his family and his financial circumstances do not allow him to rent another place; should he divorce his wife in this situation, or should he satisfy her family at the expense of his parents?

If the case has reached the courts, then a fatwa (definition) is of no benefit. However, an attempt can be made to resolve the issue by enlisting the mediation of charitable individuals who have influence with the wife, so that they may advise her to relinquish her unfair condition and clarify to her that her action constitutes disobedience and sin (nushuz and ma'siyah). She should also be alerted to the seriousness of this behavior on her marital relationship and her daughter's psyche. There is no objection to acknowledging her right to a separate house, with the husband committing to providing it when his circumstances improve. It should be noted that the involvement of the woman's paternal cousins in this relationship after she has given her consent is an act of incitement (takhbib) that is forbidden by Islamic law.
