Is a husband allowed to refuse to divorce his wife who is asking for a divorce to return to their home country, and to demand that she return the dowry and gifts if she insists on the divorce? And must he send additional money to his son if his wife is receiving sufficient government support for him? And is stopping financial support to pressure her to return to him considered wrong?

A wife's refusal to return with her husband to his country is impermissible and constitutes nushooz (disobedience), which forfeits her right to maintenance (nafaqah). The husband has the right to travel with his wife and relocate her wherever he wishes. The husband has the right to refuse divorcing her unless she seeks khulu' (divorce at the wife's instance) in exchange for compensation. The custody of the child belongs to the husband as long as the mother is in another country. The husband is not obliged to send maintenance for the child if the child is sufficiently provided for by the money given by the government, and the wife has no right to demand child maintenance as long as custody is not her right.
