Is it permissible for a woman to refuse to hold a wedding celebration or a feast due to the impermissible acts (munkarat) usually associated with them (such as intermingling of sexes, singing, and immodest display), and suffice with only the marriage contract and witnesses? And do her parents have the right to compel her to hold a feast?
May Allah reward you for your eagerness to keep your marriage free from forbidden acts, as this is one of the causes of blessing in marriage. Thank Allah that your parents agreed to the absence of lewd singing or dancing at the celebration, noting that there is permissible singing at weddings. The presence of relatives is religiously required unless it leads to something forbidden. If some women exhibit ostentation (tabarruj), you must advise them. Strive to prevent mixing (ikhtilat) and be keen on complete segregation between men and women. You have the right to choose a marriage that conforms to Islamic law and to refuse what contradicts it. If your parents insist on transgressions like mixing, you must advise them and avoid the forbidden acts. The wedding feast (walima) is recommended for the husband. If your father wishes to host a banquet for his relatives and friends, there is no harm in it, and you do not have the right to prevent him.
