The answer

A man owns his wife simply by virtue of the marriage contract, making it permissible for him to be alone with her, see whatever he wishes of her, and engage in intercourse with her at permissible times. Nevertheless, he should observe the prevailing customs in his country and fulfill the agreement with the wife's guardian if the consummation is deferred. Islamic law has attached rulings to the mere contract, such as the prohibition of the wife's mother (being married by the husband) and the prohibition of the wife to the husband's father (after divorce or death of the husband), and other rulings to consummation, such as the obligation of the full dowry and the 'iddah (waiting period). If a man has intercourse with his wife after the contract, there is no sin upon him, and the rulings of consummation apply fully as a result.
