The question

What is the ruling regarding the divorce of a man suffering from severe obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) concerning matters of purity and prayer, when Satan has tempted him with thoughts of divorce after his marriage contract, causing him to utter words of divorce without intention or will, or to utter them mistakenly as a slip of the tongue? And does the divorce of one with OCD take effect?

The answer

A man's divorce does not occur in the two aforementioned situations: whether he uttered it as a slip of the tongue without intention, or under the pressure of obsessive whispers (waswasah). This is because the divorce of one afflicted by waswasah due to waswasah is not valid. Whoever is afflicted with waswasah must turn away from it, seek Allah's help, and frequently supplicate.
