The question

What is the difference between Satan and jinn, and does Satan procreate, and does Satan serve humans in exchange for their disobedience to their Lord? And do Muslim jinn serve Muslim humans, and why do Muslim jinn not help Muslim humans in their wars, and why do disbelieving jinn not help disbelieving humans? And did examples of this occur during the time of the Messenger, may Allah’s prayers and peace be upon him? And is there a comprehensive book on these issues?

The answer

The devils (Shayatin) are the rebellious and wicked among the jinn. They are of two types: devils among humans and devils among jinn, and all of them are enemies of the prophets. Iblis is the father of the jinn, and scholars have differed regarding his origin, whether he was from the jinn or from a group of angels. Every human being has a companion from the jinn (qareen) and a companion from the angels; the devil calls to evil and whispers it, while the angel calls to good. A true believer strives against his devil by obeying Allah and adhering steadfastly to His religion, thereby weakening the devil's authority over him. As for the disobedient, he strengthens his devil through his sins. Believing jinn assist believing humans in obedience to Allah; they may attend human lessons and benefit from them, and they ask Allah for good for humans, just as believing humans desire good for their believing jinn brethren and ask Allah for that. Allah has mentioned the jinn listening to the Quran from the Prophet, peace be upon him, in Surah Al-Ahqaf and Surah Al-Jinn.
