What is the difference between a gift and a bribe, and what is their effect on society?

The difference between a gift and a bribe is like the difference between a good deed and an evil one. A gift is recommended, as the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "Exchange gifts, and you will love one another." As for bribery, it is one of the gravest sins, due to Allah Almighty's saying: "And do not consume your properties among yourselves through falsehood or hand it over to the authorities to consume a portion of the properties of the people unlawfully while you know." And the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "Allah has cursed the one who gives a bribe and the one who takes it." Bribery leads to the corruption of society through lies, deception, and the obstruction of interests, whereas a gift strengthens love and cohesion.
