Does a divorce occur if the wife says to her husband, "You are divorced if you leave the house," and she then leaves?

If the wife leaves without forgetfulness or compulsion, the divorce is effective according to the majority of scholars, and this is the most preponderant opinion. The husband may take her back before the expiry of the waiting period (iddah (definition)) if it was the first or second divorce. However, if it was the third, she becomes unlawful for him and is not permissible for him unless she marries another husband a marriage of desire, not of tahlil (making lawful), and then he divorces her after consummating the marriage.
