How will God hold accountable on the Day of Judgment the oppressor or wrongdoer who did not realize he was an oppressor or wrongdoer, such as one who believes he is in the right in daily dealings, or the Khawarij of this era who believe they are striving (in jihad), or followers of other religions who are certain of the truth of their faith, especially since they will say, "We did not intend to oppress, and we thought we were in the right"?

One must differentiate between three scenarios:

- A Muslim who wrongs others unknowingly, is mistaken and absolved of sin, based on the Almighty's saying: "Our Lord, do not take us to task if we forget or make a mistake," and the Prophet's (peace be upon him) saying: "Indeed, Allah has forgiven my nation for mistakes, forgetfulness, and what they are coerced into."

- The Khawarij are held accountable because they interpreted in a corrupt manner and opposed the path of the believers. They are transgressors due to their excommunication of Muslims based on a corrupt interpretation.

- Those who are misguided from other religions and die upon other than Islam after having heard about it, are held accountable for their disbelief, even if they believe themselves to be guided, based on the Almighty's saying: "A group He guided, and a group upon them was justly decreed error. Indeed, they took the devils as allies instead of Allah while they thought that they were guided," and His saying: "And whoever turns away from the remembrance of the Most Merciful, We will appoint for him a devil, who will be his companion. And indeed, they avert them from the path, while they think that they are guided." There is no excuse for them because their ignorance stems from their turning away from the remembrance of Allah and their ability to be guided.
