The question

What is incumbent upon someone who repeatedly swore falsely by Allah for years, then repented, knowing that he does not know the number of oaths, and has a limited amount of money? And is it permissible for him to give this money as charity to his orphaned and poor neighbors?

The answer

Frequent swearing without need is blameworthy Islamically and naturally disliked. False swearing is an immersing oath (al-yameen al-ghamus), and it is among the gravest major sins. Whoever swore falsely must repent and atone for the oaths they violated. Expiation is by feeding ten needy people, or clothing them, or emancipating a slave. If one cannot find these, then by fasting for three days for each oath. If neighbors and relatives are poor, they are more deserving of it.
