What is the ruling on the prayer of the Imam and the congregants if the Imam sat after rising from the second prostration in the third rak'ah, thinking it was the fourth, whereupon the congregants said "Subhan Allah" and the Imam immediately stood for the fourth after a brief sitting, but the congregants preceded him in standing, and the Imam did not perform the prostration of forgetfulness?

If the congregants rise before the Imam, believing that he has pronounced the Takbir for the fourth (rak'ah), there is nothing upon them. As for the Imam, he must perform the prostration of forgetfulness (sujud (definition) al-sahw) if he sat with the intention of performing the Tashahhud (definition), not with the intention of resting, because he inadvertently added an action of the same kind as the prayer. This is based on the Prophet’s (peace be upon him) saying: "If a man adds to or subtracts from his prayer, he should prostrate two prostrations." If the Imam does not perform the prostration of forgetfulness, whether due to presumption or forgetfulness, his prayer remains valid.
