Is zakat obligatory on cooperatives, and how is its nisab calculated and disbursed to eligible members? Is zakat permissible on commercial goods? And is 10% of income permissible?
Zakat is obligatory on cooperative funds if the money is owned by its members and the returns accrue to them. It is calculated by valuing the goods prepared for sale, cash, and recoverable debts at the end of the hawl (one lunar year), then one-quarter of one-tenth (2.5%) is given out. Cash in the daily fund, if it is owned by you and accrues to you, is subject to Zakat. It is preferable to set a fixed date for Zakat when a hawl has passed on the first wealth that reached the nisab (minimum threshold). Silver should be added to cash to complete the nisab. It is not permissible to give the Zakat of the fund to one of its members unless each member pays Zakat on his own wealth individually. It is permissible to disburse Zakat in kind when there is a need for it or if it is more beneficial for the poor.
