The Hadith scholars established five foundations for judging the authenticity of a hadith: the uprightness of the narrator ('adalat al-rawi), the precision of the narrator (dabt al-rawi), the continuous chain of narration (ittisal al-sanad), the absence of anomaly (adam al-shudhudh), and freedom from defects (al-salamah min al-'illah). Among the most prominent efforts in collecting authentic hadiths are the books of Sheikh Al-Albani. The most important sources for authentic hadith are Sahih al-Bukhari and Muslim, Imam Malik's Muwatta, the four Sunan collections, and the books of Sahih such as Sahih Ibn Khuzaymah and Ibn Hibban, with the ملاحظة that there are weak hadiths in collections other than the two Sahihs.
