Is he who said, "May God curse religion," then fell silent, considered a disbeliever, knowing that this statement is disbelief? And is he who conveys words of disbelief for clarification, without intending disbelief, considered a disbeliever?

Cursing or reviling the religion is an act of disbelief (kufr) by which a Muslim apostatizes from Islam, according to the consensus of the scholars. This is based on the Almighty's saying: "And if you ask them, they will surely say, 'We were only indulging in idle talk and play.' Say, 'Is it Allah and His verses and His Messenger that you were mocking?' Make no excuse; you have disbelieved after your belief." Ignorance is not an excuse for this, unless the word was uttered unintentionally. The father must repent and refrain from such speech that expels one from the faith. The phrase "fears Allah and His Messenger" is polytheistic (shirk) and must be avoided.
