What is the meaning of a Hadith being weak, but its meaning being sound?
A sound (sahih) hadith meets five conditions: a continuous chain of narration (isnad muttasil), the uprightness of the narrators ('adalat ar-ruwat), the precision of the narrators (dabt ar-ruwat), freedom from irregularity (shalhadh), and freedom from hidden defects ('illah). A weak chain of narration (da'if isnad) prevents attributing the text (matn) to the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, but it does not necessarily mean the meaning is corrupt. The meaning might be sound due to other evidence from the Quran, Sunnah, or scholarly consensus (ijma'), or it may align with a sound analogy (qiyas). Some hadiths have a weak chain of narration but a sound meaning, such as the hadith, "Water is not defiled by anything," the hadith, "Whoever adheres to seeking forgiveness," and the hadith, "The most disliked of permissible things to Allah is divorce."
