Is it obligatory to make up for the missed prayers of years before committing to prayer, or is repentance for them sufficient? And will a person be held accountable for them if they die before making them up? And is one who does not maintain their prayers considered among those who miss one or two prayers daily due to sleep, even if they wake up at the time of prayer but then are overcome by sleep?

Prayer is the pillar of faith, and it is the first thing a person will be held accountable for. Abandoning it is one of the greatest sins, but it is not considered an act of disbelief that expels one from the fold of Islam, according to the preponderant opinion. Whoever has abandoned prayer must hasten to repent and make up all missed prayers immediately. There is no sin upon one who was overcome by sleep and missed a prayer, as long as they did not intentionally delay it beyond its time, but one should take measures to ensure waking up.
