The question

Should a girl reject a religious suitor of good character—whom she has accepted—if he is poor, in order to appease her family who threaten to completely disown her if she accepts him, or should she accept him and bear the resulting family estrangement, given her desire to build a religious family?

The answer

If the parents refuse their daughter's marriage to a specific person, but do not prevent her from marrying someone else, then obedience to them is obligatory. If the girl desires the young man, she should strive to convince her parents by mentioning her need to marry and the scarcity of religious young men. If the matter is left to her, we advise her to perform Istikhara (prayer for guidance), seek consultation, and accept the religious young man of good character. His being of a lower social status is not an impediment, and his poverty is not an obstacle, for Allah has promised enrichment from His bounty.
