What is the ruling of Islamic law on the wife and her family deceiving the husband by concealing her chronic vocal illness and severe hearing impairment before marriage?
We have previously established that a repulsive illness or defect that negates the purpose of marriage—namely, tranquility and affection—is what necessitates the option (of annulment) and permits the dissolution of the marriage contract. A defect that does not impede the purpose of marriage does not necessitate this option. However, there is no impediment to divorce if the husband is not content, although patience is more virtuous. If the husband did not stipulate the wife's soundness from defects that do not necessitate the option (of annulment), her guardian is permitted to conceal these defects, such as hearing impairment, and this is not considered deception. Nevertheless, it is more virtuous to keep her and be patient with her.
