Is refraining from complimenting the husband's brother-in-law at the dinner table, out of respect for him, considered part of the meaning of shyness (hayaa')?

Modesty (al-haya') is the shrinking of the soul from indecency. It is one of the human characteristics that deter one from committing everything one desires. It is composed of timidity and chastity. A modest person is not dissolute. Encouragement for modesty has been mentioned, as the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "Modesty is part of faith," and "Modesty does not enter into anything but that it adorns it." Not sitting with the wife's father at the dining table is not considered modesty, and there is no harm in it if it does not lead to any religiously prohibited consequences.
