The answer

The best thing a Muslim can strive for is to learn the rulings of their religion so they can worship Allah with insight, for the acceptance of worship depends on its conformity to the Shari'a. Therefore, seeking knowledge is an obligation. We advise the questioner to progress gradually in seeking knowledge, starting with smaller texts and then moving to more extensive ones. To achieve benefit, it is essential for the books to be explained by a qualified person such as a father, brothers, or mahrams. If that is not possible and only a non- is available, it is permissible to study with him via phone or from behind a veil, without seclusion. As for tapes, they can be compensated for by reading reliable exegesis books such as Ibn Kathir and Fath al-Qadir.
