The answer

One should accuse oneself of showing off (riya') and frequently seek Allah's forgiveness from hidden (polytheism), recalling the Prophet's prayer: "O Allah, we seek refuge in You from knowingly associating anything with You, and we seek Your forgiveness for what we do not know." Al-Manawi explained that shirk in worship is more subtle and easier to fall into than shirk in Allah's essence, names, and attributes, which the Prophet (peace be upon him) referred to as riya', and this is the state of most people. One must avoid obsessive thoughts by not abandoning good deeds for fear of riya'; for Al-Fudayl ibn Iyad said: "Abandoning a deed for the sake of people is showing off (riya'), and performing a deed for the sake of people is shirk, and sincerity is that Allah protects you from both."
